So, what exactly is the meaning behind Dirty White Sneakers?
Let me tell you about a very vivid memory I have of my first summer living in New York City.
Back to Where it Began
I had just moved to New York City and was interning for a fashion stylist. I was extremely nervous for my first day on the job and did my best to look stylish in my new white sneakers.
I was handed a metro card and instructed to pick up clothing from a PR firm in the Meatpacking District. When I arrived, I was given three very large, very heavy garment bags filled with Dolce and Gabbana. As I struggled to carry the couture down the streets, I quickly realized I was lost.
I finally found my way down into the subway before my phone died and my roadmap disappeared. It was a hundred degrees outside, I was sweating profusely, I was lost, I had thousands of dollars in my hands, and I look down to see my feet are bleeding on my new sneakers. I sat down in the station, completely flustered, confused and scared and started to cry. This was not quite like the glamorous fashion jobs they portray in the movies.
After a few moments of self-pity, I wiped my tears and I figured it out. It took me all day, but I finally found my way back to Brooklyn and successfully delivered the clothes. I went back the next day for more. And my sneakers got dirtier. And I replaced them. And then they got dirty. And I replaced them too.
White sneakers do not stay unmarked. All those marks represent an adventure, a risk, a success, a tear, a laugh, a struggle, a goal reached. I didn’t see it then, but looking back I’m proud of where my dirty white sneakers brought me.
I created my website as a creative outlet to discuss my love of fashion but also as a journal for my younger self in the hopes that it may help or encourage someone else along the way.
And that is the meaning behind Dirty White Sneakers.
